Adventure Walk | Coeur d Alene | Family

Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
There is only one person missing in these images.
My 12 year old son, who I love with all my soul spends most of his time with dad.  Someday....
Although I have a fantastic time with these two little monkeys,
it is always difficult for me to take pictures and feel that empty space
of knowing someone else belongs in the pictures as well.
I have a beautiful family, and blessed with three of the
most wonderful boys!

Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
Hey, did you know these ponds have long toed salamanders, frogs, bugs, spiders, and all sorts of critters
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
Yes, that is a black eye.  Let me just say: trampoline.

Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
 Self Portrait
Who would not love this face.... I mean really
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
Boys will be Boys!  Trying to catch the sun and show off our skills and hard earned muscles (of course)
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
The above image will go down in one of my ALL time FAVORITES
This is what it is to be a boy!
Freedom.
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
 Green
not to be confused with the book
Red: is the new green.
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
Always looking around us for what we can find if we look close enough.
I find that even such a simple afternoon hike, is a lifetime of
philosophic experiences.
Life lessons are all around us, if we watch and listen.
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
I started a portfolio years ago with the title: Essence of Light
and another one titled: Essence of Sound
I was reminded of that portfolio and a book I created with some
intimate images with light and the natural environment
these will be continuations of a expression of spring!
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
The boys must have found a hundred snails along our path.
Some might say stop to smell the roses....
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
Natural adventurers, my boys have inherited my passion for
the natural landscape, the intricate designs nature creates.
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
A storm blew in only for about 10 minutes, broken clouds, rain showers and
the most brilliant filtered light gave way to unique
images.  Canon 50mm 1.4 got to come out and play.
I love the perspective it offers.
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
Can you see the hidden child in the above image?  There are two in that picture.
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
After an afternoon of adventuring, collecting sticks, pinecones, and other treasures (LNT does not apply here...)
boys rested on a wooden bridge
the light all evening was whimsical
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
After hiding behind tall grass in the field, the boys jumped out to scare me,
nevermind that they are wearing red.......
I am quite certain I did not know they were there =)
simple joys.
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
The above image is one of my favorites, not only is it interesting to look at,
but it reminds me of a great many things.
I often find a sweet saddness in how my boys grow so quickly,
I often say they grow like weeds--and they do.
I love the worn shoes on his feet.
I love the stick in his hand.
I love the adventurous spirit I've passed along.

Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012
Every time I go out exploring, whether it is in the back yard, the neighboring mountain, the backcountry, a wild wild river, I am captivated and inspired by my natural environment.
The simple ways light plays on surfaces, gentle rains showers, thunder & lightning,
wind, I become connected to all things.
Rebecca Harlow Photography 2012

RN | Emerging Life

Dear Rebecca,

Congratulations on your acceptance into the Fall 2012 Registered Nursing Program.

Making preparations for my life.  Getting my "house" in order.  Will be done working next week.  Taking summer off with the boys.  Going on a road trip to the Oregon Coast for 2 weeks in June, will make a stop in Seattle, Olympia, Portland and various other places.  Load Jeep, boys, bikes, camping gear, camera gear...  good times!!

Rode trail 257 last week--Mountain bike, was a good ride.

May 19th, 2012 rafted The Dirty Thirty on the Locsha river!  Love, did I say LOVE whitewater!!!  It's not Hells Canyon, but a great stretch of river, at flows of just over 13,000 csf, it was a great time to raft the SuperOneDay.

Victory

Dixie Pong April 2012
At my son's birthday party a couple weeks ago
my younger brother and I engaged in a very
serious competition of DIXIE PONG
You may have never heard of it, I have not
so we collaboratively came up with a name
for our competition.

Equipment: dixie cup, ping pong ball

The Goal: to throw and to catch the ping pong ball in the
Dixie cup.

.... this may sound easy, but consider that it really
does take skill and coordination.

.... of course we played several lengthy matches
and both of our competitive drives engaged
and we decided that DIXIE PONG will be the next
serious national craze....

don't judge--until you've tried it
we laughed - we almost cried
we almost threw that damn little cup more than once...

athletes and spectators alike are invested: this is not a competition
for the weak or vulnerable

Rebecca Harlow Photography April 2012
Seven years ago
my family was complete with the arrival
of this fantastic little boy.

Everyday this little guy teaches me something
beautiful.

PSP | Progressive Supranuclear Palsy

ASSISTED LIVING IS A LONG-TERM CARE SOLUTION
During the past four years, Beehive Homes Assisted Living has provided specialized care with the cooperative efforts of Hospice of North Idaho for one of our long time residents diagnosed with Progressive supranuclear palsy.  Although, it is a rare disorder, our care staff has hands on experience with the day to day needs and complexities of this disorder.

PROGRESSIVE SUPRANUCLEAR PALSY
What is Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP)?  Progressive supranuclear palsy is a rare brain disorder that causes serious and progressive problems controlling balance and movement, along with complex eye movement and  complex thinking.  Mood and behavior alterations are common with those with PSP.  Commonly misdiagnosed as Parkinson's disease, Progressive supranuclear palsy effects similar areas of the brain-substantia nigra.  The hallmark of PSP is the accumulation of abnormal protein called tau which collects mainly in the brain stem.

As it's name suggests this particular disease begins slowly and continues to worsen over long periods of time (progressive), and causes weakness (palsy) by damaging certain parts of the brain above very small structures called nuclei in the brain that control eye movements (supranuclear).

Due to its rare nature, PSP only affects approximately 20,000 Americans, whereas Parkinson's disease affects more than 500,000 Americans.

Loss of balance while walking is the first symptom to be recognized in individuals with PSP, the individual may experience unexplained falls, stiffness or awkwardness in gait.  As the disease progresses an individual will begin to develop a blurring in vision and problems controlling eye movement.  If you or your loved one is affected with PSP, then you already understand that maintaining a safe environment that provides assistance with daily living and mobility is vital especially as the disease progresses.

The tomato & your health!

  • Anti-oxidant: Tomatoes contain a lot of vitamins A and C, mostly because of beta-carotene, and these vitamins act as an anti-oxidant, working to neutralize dangerous free radicals in the blood stream. These dangerous free radicals can cause cell damage. And keep in mind, the more red the tomato, the more beta-carotene it contains. Also, remember that cooking destroys much of vitamin C, so stick with raw tomatoes for these benefits.
  • Diabetes: Tomatoes also have plenty of the mineral chromium, which helps diabetics to keep their blood sugar level under control.
  • Smoking: No, tomatoes can’t help you stop smoking, but what they can do is to help reduce the damage smoking does to your body. Tomatoes contain chlorogenic acid and coumaric acid, which help to fight against some of the carcinogens brought about by cigarette smoke.
  • Vision: Because of all that vitamin A, tomatoes are also an excellent food to help improve your vision. This also means tomatoes can help your eyes be better about night blindness.
  • Heart troubles: Due to potassium and vitamin B, tomatoes help to lower blood pressure and to lower high cholesterol levels. This, in turn, could help prevent strokes, heart attack and other potentially life-threatening heart problems.
  • Skin care: Because of high amounts of lycopene, a substance found in many of the more expensive over-the-counter facial cleansers, tomatoes are great for skin care. The best way to use tomatoes for skin care is to peel a bunch of them, eight to twelve, then lay back and place the tomato skins on your face (or other skin areas). Make sure the inside of the tomato skins are against your skin, and let this sit for at least 10 minutes. Then wash off. You’re face will be cleaner and more shiny, though it also might be a little red from the tomatoes. Don’t worry, that red on your face will wear away.
  • Hair: Remember all that vitamin A in tomatoes? Well, it’s good for keeping your hair strong and shiny, and its also good for your eyes, teeth, skin and bones.
  • Cancer: Various studies have shown that because of all that lycopene in tomatoes, the red fruit helps to lessen the chances of prostate cancer in men, and also reduces the chance of stomach cancer and colorectal cancer. Lycopene is considered somewhat of a natural miracle anti-oxidant that may help to stop the growth of cancer cells. And, interestingly enough, cooked tomatoes produce more lycopene than do raw tomatoes, so enjoy that tomato soup!
  • Bones: Tomatoes have a fair amount of vitamin K and calcium, both of which help to strengthen and possibly repair in minor ways bones and bone tissue.
  • Kidney stones and gallstones: Eating tomatoes without the seeds has been shown in some studies to lessen the risk of gallstones and kidney stones

Winter End | Coeur d Alene, Idaho

    In between
Saying Goodbye to what has been,
Saying Hello to what is to come.

This winter has felt like a longer hibernation than most,
yet, in the glimpse of the setting sun, reminders of laughter,
bike rides, ball in the park, evening walks, bbq's,
swimming, and spending quality time holding hands with my
boys, I rejoice in the birth of Spring,
    shedding the winters fur
    summer bronzing my skin
    new beginnings
    day dreams
    carefree
    love

    Land | Single Track

I've not posted in a while.  Life has been busy.  Working a full time job as an employee, is something I've not done since 1998.  I have been working full time now for 2 months.
I must say that I sort of (I said sort of) like the structure of knowing
when I work and knowing how much I make.
It does not leave as much time for adventuring, which is something I am
    passionate about.
Over the weekend, we managed to load up the bikes, tent and all our gear,
and headed for what was suppose to be warmer weather, although there were inviting
blue skies, the wind was fierce and the temperature felt like 26 degrees.
We woke this morning with frost on the tent, nothing we have
not experienced before, and certainly not as cold as we have experienced in
a tent before.  But it was cold.
We rode a single track system called Patrol Trails just outside Pasco, WA.
I am not fond of the high desert utopia, however, the loose sand
was fun to ride in, and the sage always smells so good.

Whiskey Jack Pottery is a hidden treasure located just North of Sandpoint, Idaho, walking distance to the shores of beautiful Lake Pend Oreille. Whiskey Jack Pottery is home to Master Potter Dan Shook.  I share a love for pottery and happened to meet Nicole Black, partner to Dan Shook, at a Artisan's fair over a year ago.  I was immediately drawn to the natural handcrafted pottery on her shelf.  As I poured over each piece of pottery wanting to purchase each and every piece as I carefully inspected the unique features, shapes and functionality of her pieces.  The conversation came easy as I asked her questions about her craftsmanship, and expressing my own love and desire to learn such a traditional skill, I asked if she would be willing to give me one on one lessons.  She willingly said that she would love to and gave me her card.  Months went by and my desire to learn the craft grew and grew, I found the card and called Nicole, in just a couple weeks time I set up my first lesson.  I was enchanted by the warmth and inviting environment that Whiskey Jack Pottery offered, nestled back off the beaten path in a small farmers field at the base of the Selkirks and near the Scottchman Peaks Wilderness Area, I felt right at home.  My passion for pottery grew and my desire to tell everyone I knew about this new found passion!  I began promoting Whiskey Jack Pottery to everyone I knew in person and on line.  The Whiskey Jack Pottery social media project has a special place in my life, it not only allows me to shape my own pottery it has shaped and expanded my life, my goals and my direction.

Since the beginning of the Whiskey Jack project I have been contacted by others to provide them with exposure, a personal involvement and relationship with their businesses as well.  I am developing the framework of my social media content packages and if you would like to give it a try, please contact me directly by email and I would be more than happy to interview you and decide if your business would be complimentary to my growing vision.

    Cypress Albums | Love These

jumped to my number one Favorite!
They feel organic, they are simple, sophisticated and timeless.
Once I held one in my hand, I was immediately addicted to the texture, the nostalgia and romantic
    elegance of these albums.
In today's world of on line photo printing and e commerce, I was getting a little
disheartened with many opting out of purchasing albums with their portrait sessions,
there is always a product out there cheaper, sure
however, when you place your cherished images in those albums
there is not that long lasting afair of memories
and subtle tugs at your heart
as with an album like this.
The color pallete is also subtle and elegant, reminds me of yester-year, faint laughter, summer love, romantic strolls in the park in the rain.  We are creatures of experience, and I am here to say that these albums bring back those moments and tug at my soul.
Displaying them in the home adds a sense of vintage sophistication.

A Quote from thier website: "Cypress Fine Handmade Albums & Boxes began in 1996. As a recent bride and trained artist I searched for a unique and elegant album to display the images from my wedding. As a fine artist, I wanted a museum quality presentation for my images.

Unable to find what I was looking for, I began researching the finest archival materials and the ancient art of bookmaking. After months of research, I designed a new album. The albums were then refined through consultations with photographers across the United States. Later, a European style box was added to protect and store the album. Now our boxes are also used as presentation boxes for matted prints. The result is an intimate, personal book and box to pass on for generations. I hope you enjoy these boxes and albums and receive as much pleasure as we get in making them."

    Social Media | WhiskeyJack Pottery

Do YOU love cooking?  I do!  I love unique features in my kitchen.  I love sharing and presenting homemade treasures that add nostalgia and timelessness in my kitchen.  I love cooking almost as much as I love photographing the things I love.

One of my favorite Social Media  projects is with WhiskeyJack Pottery
Not only do I share a passion for creating pottery unique's.  I love
photographing their pieces and sharing this North Idaho Gem!

I am also passionate about cooking, therefor it is understandable that I would fall madly in love with natural elements to adorn my kitchen.  I must admit that sauces taste fresher when crushing whole herbs and spices with a  mortal and pestle.  In fact I am pretty certain that your coffee, teas and soups taste better sipped from the warmth that penetrates through these beautiful pieces of pottery.  I love the way they feel in hand, comforting, simple, natural.

    Elegant Natural Tea Pots

What I love about these are the rustic home feeling.
They have elegant simplicity in the way they fit in your hands.
My favorite feature on this tea pot is the lid handle,
pressed into shape by hands, it just fits so beautifully in between your fingers.
